“Thank you!!!

The ceremony was perfect!

When you called on the winds I got literal chills and immediately felt so much calmer.

I appreciate you so much!

The Vow Witch

Welcome and hello. My name is Sarah Johnston.

I’m a bats and bees kind of person. A little shadow, a little light. A yogi witch that listens to doom metal through light-up frog head phones while skipping in the forest or barefoot in the moss. I believe that life is multi-faceted; everything is vibration; adults take themselves too serious in all the wrong ways; that all religions share a thread of belief but have different languages and cultural practices in which they worship and ritualize; and that our human need to understand our experience here on Earth gave birth to our mythologies, spiritual traditions, and systems of belief. I keep an array of religious and spiritual symbols and iconography on my altar, consider myself mostly agnostic because what could a girl from Ohio possibly know about truly divine matters, and if I had to pick something that I “worship” I would tell you the Cosmos.

I am a state certified, spiritually inclusive, non-denominational ordained minister that specializes in writing and performing non-traditional wedding ceremonies and spiritual rituals. I do not belong to an organization that promotes a particular religion, spiritual tradition, or philosophy and I work with all types of people from various backgrounds and walks of life. I’m happy to celebrate your love in whatever way you want and seek to make your day truly magical for you and your partner(s).

My personal practice I classify as a mix of Nature-based spirituality and ritualism, Eastern philosophy, Paganism, folk customs, quantum physics, witch lore, and mythology. I was raised religiously Southern Baptist and spiritually Appalachian folk magic- granny craft. At the age of eleven, I was gifted my first tarot deck and started a regular meditation practice that continues to this day. I began studying yoga, astrology, Druid magic, and Jungian shadow work in my teens; and over the past three decades, I have trained and studied in many different cultural and spiritual traditions, participated in classes and workshops, and expanded my knowledge and practice.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in History with a focus on philosophy, religion, research, and writing; I’m a 200-hr Certified Yoga Instructor; Usui Reiki practitioner; Certified Meditation and Breathwork Coach; Certified Ayurveda Nutrition Coach; and have certificates and training in Western Astrology, Herbalism, and Tarot. I love helping people set up their own personal practice of healing, creation, and spiritual connection.  I have planned and led various types of workshops and programming professionally over the past decade; facilitated classes and groups; and have designed themed events for a variety of celebrations.

My dharma path is that of Researcher, Artist, and Entertainer. My Big Three are Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon, and Libra rising. I play the ukulele and sing in an eight-piece Skiffle band, campaign as an Eladrin Cleric or a Halfling Barbarian, write, make art, craft spells, hike, dance, practice yoga, cook, and enjoy photography and traveling. I have many tattoos, including a pink peony on the side of my head; consider myself a metalhead but listen to many genres of music; belong to many nerdy fandoms; Christmas/Yule is my favorite holiday because pretty, pretty lights; I’m possibly obsessed with soup; and I’ve never met a potato I didn’t like. I’m a mother and married my high school sweetheart eighteen years ago and counting.

For my own wedding, the officiant was…we’ll say, not the right fit for us. He was a pastor that had agreed to conduct a non-religious ceremony and then attempted to proselytize to me while I was getting ready- like, putting my makeup on, mascara wand in hand- and convince me to include his god in our ceremony. This conversation ended with me very upset, sternly saying, “I’d like you to perform the ceremony that we already agreed upon.” Unfortunately, he hadn’t put much effort into this non-religious ceremony. The reading was choppy and unimpassioned, the unity ritual was generic, and the man was so distraught by the end that he presented my new husband and I by my maiden name and not my husband’s last name as discussed. It wasn’t a total shit show- the meaning behind the day saved it- but it wasn’t a good ceremony, and has been memorable for all the wrong reasons.

I started The Vow Witch Weddings & Rituals, Ltd. because I love ritual and I love LOVE. I think both are the crux of our human existence. Ritual transforms everyday events into sacred moments and serves as a reminder that we design our own lives. I want to help you craft a ritual that expresses your love, honors your commitment, and supports this next step in your relationship. A ceremony you’ll want to remember because it transformed a custom practiced around the world into your own unique, sacred event. There can be no woo-woo or a lot of woo-woo. You can recite your vows in English or Klingon. I can read a love poem, a chapter of the Tao Te Ching, or your favorite passage from Lord of the Rings. Whether you want to cast runes under a full moon or fishing lines at the family pond, I’ll perform the ceremony you and your partner helped to create.

I do not perform religious ceremonies. This means Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, etc. I am open to incorporating certain traditions or aspects into your ceremony to honor your ancestors or upbringing, but otherwise, you should find a religious leader of your faith to perform your ceremony. I do not read Bible scripture, Barbara. And I do not worship Satan, but also Hail Yourself. We are ALL divine beings having a human experience and there is not one valid mode in which to travel through the Cosmos.

 FAQs

  • Still confused? Yes, I am a practicing Witch-detailed above. No, witches aren’t evil. No, I don’t perform curses or hexes. I truly feel sorry for you if this term offends you. Grow up. Open a book. Look at a tree. Touch grass.

  • I love performing interfaith rituals that weave two world faith perspectives together! I do not perform religious ceremonies. I will not read Bible scripture for you, Barbara. And I do not worship Satan. Hail Yourself. I’m a practicing Witch and an indie celebrant that is not representing a particular religion, spiritual tradition, or philosophy. I will not perform strictly religious ceremonies for anyone- Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, etc. BUT I will happily incorporate some religious traditions, language, or philosophy into your ceremony. I will not quote your religious texts- whether you call it a Bible, the Torah, or the Qur’an. I will not ask anyone to ‘obey’ anyone else.

  • This will sound like straight bull- which is how you know it’s true (I can show you the screenshots, haha)- but on the morning of a full moon in 2021 I had a ‘vision’ during my morning meditation of officiating a friend’s wedding. She had recently asked me to be a bridesmaid and I had no idea if they had already hired an officiant, but I contacted her with my idea. She wrote this back (edited for brevity) : “Okay, so crazy shit here…like the original idea was ‘I want someone witchy/understands nature to marry me. Oh, Sarah, fits the description but idk if she can even officiate and I don’t wanna be bothersome- so I’ll just ask her to be a bridesmaid.’”

I became ordained that day with the non-denominational Universal Life Church and then state certified in Ohio. After meeting with her fiancé, the ceremony we created was a mix of Nature-based ritual, Dungeons and Dragons references- including a d20 roll to see who would speak their vows first- and an anime quote Pronouncement.

  • Unless otherwise directed or requested, I show up in ‘normal’ professional all-black attire.

I absolutely love when couples want me to dress as a typical trope witch though, so it is an option that I wear all-black and a black witch hat.

I also love a good themed wedding and costumes.

  • Not typically. I sometimes have other rituals or ceremonies to perform, so I do not stay for your reception. I will stay after for any paperwork and then make a quiet exit. I’m not opposed to a plate of food to go- if you insist- but you are not required to provide food or entertainment for me.

  • You bet your fabulous ass I do.

  • A resounding HUZZAH! Yes, please! I have a number of Ren-Faire style dresses and can fashion together a variety of Fantasy-style costumes. If your theme is something I don’t own or wouldn’t be able to create, you can either provide the costume or the cost for the outfit is added to your package.

  • Also, HUZZAH! Currently, I’m a Cleric exploring the Dungeon of the Mad Mage…and also a Barbarian fighting humanoid crab-people abroad a pirate ship…um…my point is, I am not unfamiliar with role playing, improvising, and story-building. I love it, in fact! Already have an adventure planned? Or want help scripting one? Let’s talk. Additional charges for costume and/or props may apply.

  • You and your fiancé must obtain a marriage license before your wedding. The marriage certificate is obtained after the wedding and is legal proof of your married status. If you live in Ohio, you must obtain a marriage license from the Probate Court in the county in which at least one of you resides and you must have the license before coming to Hocking County for your wedding. If you are not from Ohio or‍ ‍if one of you lives in Hocking County, the marriage license is obtained from the Hocking County Probate Court. Your marriage certificate will be available for order from the Probate Court about 5 business after your marriage license is certified and recorded.

  • *face palm.

No. Not in a the way you’re asking. Like, flying brooms and wizard type magic. No. Just no. Existence itself is vibration. Life is vibration. Everything moves and resonates- the air you breathe, your thoughts, the chair you’re sitting on- different frequencies of the same Cosmic vibration. My practice is about learning to work with the different frequencies of our natural world to unlock deeper understanding of energy and vibration, and gain access to the creative mechanisms of reality itself. Tap into the Universal Hum so to speak. That’s science. That’s magic.
